[NAPOLEON] -- The Table Talk and Opinions of Napoleon Buonaparte. London: Sampson, Low, Son, and Marston, 1870.

Richly gilt and inlaid Cosway binding with two miniatures by C.B. Currie. The miniatures depict Napoleon II as a baby and a young child. On the upper cover he is shown full length in dress uniform and kneeling in prayer, with a bicorn hat on the grass behind him and a French flag in front of him. On the lower cover is a formal half-length portrait, this time he holds a bicorn hat, decorated with a pin and a bunch of violets. Stated third edition.

Octavo (144 x 97mm). Half-title. Title printed in red and black. Full navy blue crushed levant morocco by Riviere & Son, covers with single gilt borders enclosing gilt floral corner decorations, inner gilt frame, two horizontal gilt straps with vine design on pointillé gilt grounds, concentric gilt squares of inlaid brown morocco surrounding circular hand-painted miniatures on ivory, glazed and bordered with a single gilt rule, the upper cover additionally lettered “The King of Rome” at head and “Je prie dieu pour mon Pere et pour la France” at foot; spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, board edges and turn-ins gilt, red moiré silk doublures, all edges gilt, stamp-signed by the binders on upper turn-in and by the C.B. Currie, the artist, on lower doublure; velvet-lined slipcase. Provenance: Swann Galleries New York, 14 January 1993, lot 277.
