Note du spécialiste

Christofle's stand at the 1900 Paris exhibition championed the theme of air and water with a series of innovative and whimsical surtouts intended to embrace the 'new style' of the Art Nouveau. The present model, exhibited under the title Le mer, was originally designed by Joindy, Dinée and Léon Mallet for Christofle in May 1898. Another surtout, together with a pair of small compotes, was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 14 April, 2008, lot 36 ($36,000).
