Note du spécialiste

The present suite of wall panels once hung in 'The Octagon Room' of Mount Pleasant, the country estate built in 1763 by Gerardus (James) Beekman’s at what is now 51st Street and First Avenue, New York. Beekman's affinity for fine French 18th and 19th century decorative arts is apparent from the sizable long-term loan by the family to the New-York Historical Society in the mid-20th century. In addition to the present lot, the extensive loan included a highly important suite of early 19th century American seat furniture covered in bespoke Aubusson tapestry which was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 21 January 2000, lots 720-725.
