The miniature, 100 x 78 mm. high, set into a wooden Letter Tray with a coronet surmount (410 mm high) and cartouche inscribed 'Charles 3rd Duke of Richmond'

The sitter and by descent to Lady Georgina Lennox, later Countess Bathurst (d. 1841), and by descent.

Specialist note

The sitter was the son of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Sarah, née Cadogan. He was a British Army officer and politician. He was known for his support for the colonists during the American Revolutionary War and served in the ministries of Rockingham and Pitt. He was also a passionate patron of the arts and a member of the Society of Arts.
