AN INDO-PORTUGUESE IVORY, GREEN-STAINED IVORY AND TORTOISESHELL-INLAID INDIAN ROSEWOOD TABLE CABINET
EARLY 18TH CENTURY
The hinged top above a pair of doors enclosing a fitted interior with six Indian rosewood drawers, the underside with printed label for '?. H. PONSONBY', with carrying handles, the ivory originally further green-stained
12 ½ in. (32 cm.) high; 16 in. (41 cm.) wide; 11 ¾ in. (30 cm.) deep

Possibly Henrietta, Countess of Bessborough 1761-1821 and by descent.

Specialist note


The 'H. Ponsonby' to the label to the underside of this table cabinet suggests it was likely the personal property Henrietta, Countess of Bessborough, wife of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough (1758-1844). Their second son Major-General Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby (1783-1837) married Lady Emily Charlotte Bathurst (d. 1877), daughter of the 3rd Earl Bathurst, and it is probably via this connection that the cabinet entered the Bathurst collection at Cirencester Park.
