Œuvre rare découverte récemment seulement, ce Miroir de 1964 est une forme tardive, innovante et remarquable de «readymade» - ces objets radicaux avec lesquels Marcel Duchamp instaura un art de l’idée plus de cinquante ans plus tôt, en 1913. Seule l’existence de trois de ces miroirs nous était connue jusqu’à présent; tous, comme la présente œuvre, uniques et signés par l’artiste au revers. Duchamp avait fait cadeau de cette version-ci - la plus grande de cet ensemble exceptionnel - à la famille de son propriétaire actuel. Elle n’avait jamais encore été montrée au public.
Contrairement à ses readymades antérieurs, les miroirs signés de Duchamp enrichissent sa fameuse méthode d’un concept totalement inédit: le readymade en évolution constante, qui interagit activement à la fois avec l'espace environnant et le spectateur. La signature de l’artiste est apposée à chacun des visages qui se reflètent dans la glace. Espiègle, l’œuvre génère ainsi un défilé interminable de portraits, tous plus singuliers et inimitables les uns que les autres. Duchamp, au moment d'inscrire son nom sur ces miroirs, avait lui-même déclaré: «Je suis en train de signer de futurs portraits readymade» (Duchamp, cité in A. L'artiste conçoit ainsi une forme de portrait d’un tout nouveau genre, une œuvre d’art en perpétuelle mutation et aux possibilités infinies, qui laisse à son observateur le soin de la parachever lorsqu'il pose son reflet sur la paroi réfléchissante. A rare and newly discovered work, Marcel Duchamp’s Miroir of 1964 is a late, great and novel form of "readymade", the radical, conceptual artworks that the artist had first made over fifty years prior in 1913. Up until now, only three of these mirrors were known to exist, each one, like the present work, unique, and signed by the artist on the reverse. The largest of this rare group, Miroir was received as a gift from Duchamp by the family of the present owner and has never before been publicly exhibited.
Unlike his earlier readymades, with these signed mirrors, Duchamp introduced a new concept to his infamous practice, creating a readymade that exists in a constant state of flux, actively interacting both with the space surrounding it and with the viewer. Every person reflected in the glass is accompanied by the artist’s signature, the work creating a playful and unending flow of reflected portraits, each unique and irreplicable; as Duchamp declared upon signing the mirrors, ‘I am signing readymade future portraits’ (Duchamp, quoted in A. Schwarz, The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp, London, vol. 2, 1997, p. 841). In this way, Duchamp conceived a new form of portraiture, creating an ever-changing art work that not only holds infinite possibilities, but endows the viewer with the agency of completing it when they meet their reflection in its mirrored surface. Combining an exploration of portraiture and the self, concepts of authorship, and questioning the role of the spectator in the production of art, Miroir demonstrates Duchamp’s indomitable position within 20th Century art, as he continued to pave the way both for his contemporaries as well as generations of artists that followed.
Duchamp’s friend, Arturo Schwarz, dates the genesis of this unique group of mirrors to a trip that Duchamp made to Italy in 1964. "His signing of the back of these three [now known to be four] mirrors was occasioned by his visit to the site of the Thirteenth Milan Triennale", Schwarz writes, "where a one-man exhibition of the work of Enrico Baj (including his characteristic collages of broken-up mirrors) was being installed by Stefano Bini and his two brothers" (Schwarz, ibid., p. 841). By scratching his signature into the silvered reverse of the mirror, Duchamp, as he had first done with a number of his readymades in the early 1900s, turned a banal everyday object into an artwork. The power of the signature and the related concept of authorship were lifelong preoccupations for the artist. From the iconic Fountain, to the reproductions of his paintings distributed in the 1930s, La Boîte-en-valise, and the edition of replica readymades he produced in 1964, Duchamp continually played with and disrupted the conventional notion of the unique art work. Relating to this continuous desire for replication, Duchamp’s "renvoi miroirique" or "mirrorical return", a phrase that first appeared in the notes of the Green Box, was a concept that he introduced in the early 1940s when he began producing mirror images of his earlier works. Miroir embodies this theme, creating an endlessly self-replicating work that presents a mirror image of the world that appears with a mirror image of Duchamp’s signature.
No longer was the often-revered hand of the artist the defining principle for a work’s validity, worth or meaning; instead, Duchamp posited that it was the concept and thought behind its creation that made it a work of art. It was this inherent idea that led to a resurgence of interest in Duchamp’s work in the late 1950s and early 60s. A new generation of artists was growing tired of the primacy of Abstract Expressionism, a movement characterised by gestural, subjective expressions of the self. Johns, Rauschenberg, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Manzoni and many others turned away from this internalised mode of art making and instead looked outwards to embrace and integrate life in all its forms into art.
The mirror became an important vehicle for these artists to achieve this aim of creating art that integrated life – both conceptually and literally, as the present work shows. While Warhol wanted the viewer to believe that his role as an artist was to simply reflect contemporary society, Lichtenstein depicted cartoon mirrors in works that revel in the boundary between the real and artificial. In Europe, Pistoletto was also exploring the potential of the mirrored surface in his art, believing like Duchamp that it was the viewer and their surroundings which completed the art work, creating, in words similar to those of Duchamp’s a few years prior, a "self-portrait of the world".
