Abdul Hadi El-Gazzar (Egyptian, 1925 - 1966)

In the present lot, we can see how El-Gazzar progresses through different styles while still maintaining the essence of his own. In this sketch of a man, the artist remains within his form of figural drawings in an almost caricature-like rendering of this bearded man. The subject’s gaze is deep staring at the viewer directly. The lack of detail in the rest of the drawing allows us to focus solely on the gaze. However there is still something that remains distracting in his view. This might create a sensation of discomfort juxtaposed with a feeling of ease.
