A dry winter was followed by an exceptionally mild and dry summer, including the month of August. During September the weather warmed up, with some occasional showers. A late harvest took place at the end of September. A great vintage. Not fully declared as by the depression had arrived and also the cellars were still full with the 1927s, an abundant vintage. Only a select few shippers declared the 1931 vintage, hence these are very rare now. The Ramos Pinto vintage 1931 was made from Quinta do Bom Retiro grapes and bottled after three years in cask.
Tasting note: Beautiful red colour with orange rim. High-toned, straw and fine dried fruit tones on the back followed by coffee grounds, tobacco and honey. Elegant and lightly honeyed. A slight resemblance to a high quality bual is clear. I love the aromas on the nose, very distinctive.
Refined elegant taste, fine-tuned with honey aromas. Very good. Quite intense taste like a rich Madeira. This is exceptional! September 2017. EV.
