The pose of the figure in this painting is based on Grant’s Reclining Nude (circa 1930-1932; Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter). The background, clothes and musical instrument are all newly added. Grant may have used a photograph of the Exeter painting or possibly a preliminary charcoal drawing for it.
