DUNCAN GRANT (1885-1978)

In the 1950s, Grant and Vanessa Bell made almost annual painting expeditions to France and Italy. In spring 1955 they rented La Mura, a large house with extensive views, built on the town walls of Asolo in the Veneto. They were joined for part of the time by two painter friends, Edward le Bas and Eardley Knollys. Grant painted several views from the house, such as the present work, as well as a fine portrait of an elderly Italian woman who helped look after the household.
