Note du spécialiste
From October 1921 to January the following year, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell and her family rented La Maison Blanche at the back of an as-yet unspoilt St Tropez. Grant worked at landscapes and views of the harbour, making small, fresh oil studies such as the present work which were the basis of larger more finished works such Landscape, South of France (Tate, London), painted in the studio, away from the motif. This view of fishing boats on the perimeter of the Vieux Bassin resulted in a fully-realised work which was bought by the Contemporary Art Society and allocated to Manchester City Art Gallery.
