Specialist note
Realizing the demand of the American market for complicated pocket watches in the late 19th century, Patek Philippe began producing split or “rattrapate” chronographs in 1861. Initially, the demand stemmed from industrial purposes, timing for railways or sports such as racing. Retailed by N. Matson in Chicago, the present watch reaffirms the demand for complicated watches in the USA at this time, with many split second chronographs being ordered for other well known retailers such as Tiffany & Co, Bailey Banks & Biddle, Spaulding and more.
