CIRCA 1760, IRON-RED WHEEL MARKS
Probably modelled by Laurentius Russinger, the sculptor chiselling the bust of a lady, the painter painting a landscape on an easel, each on a rocaille-moulded base (sculptor restuck through base and with minor chipping to hammer, chisel and ribbons at neck, painter with minor chipping and restoration to ribbons at neck, fingers and brush)
The sculptor 5 ¾ in. (14.6 cm.), the painter 5 5/8 in. (14.2 cm.) high

Specialist note

Höchst suffered serious financial difficulties from 1756 until about 1759 when production was resumed on a larger scale. Laurentius Russinger was first mentioned as a modeller at the factory in 1758 and became its leading artist, helping to revive the factory's fortunes.1 A similar example of the sculptor group is illustrated by Kurt Röder and Michel Oppenheim, Das Höchster Porzellan, Mainz, 1930, pl. 26c, no. 157, and on pp. 37-38 the counterpart figure of a painter is mentioned.
