with Galerie Pardo, Paris, where acquired on 3 July 1956 by the following,
Emil G. Bührle, Zurich, and by descent to the present owner.

We are grateful to Drs. Luuk Pijl for proposing the attribution to the Monogrammist I.D.M. on the basis of a photograph. Drs. Pijl compares this picture with the elusive master's landscape in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, Madrid (for a full discussion on the artist see Ivan Gaskell, The Thyssen-Bornemisza collection. Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish Painting, London 1989, pp. 430-37).
