Specialist note

The sitter was the son of William Chetwynd, 4th Viscount Chetwynd of Bearhaven (1721-1791) and Susannah Cope (d. 1790) and he was born at Haywood Park, Staffordshire, He was Clerk to the Privy Council between 1772 and 1821 and gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the York Fencible Infantry Regiment. His correspondence with the Earl of Liverpool between 1781 and 1791 is preserved at The British Library.
