Constantijn Huygens II (1628-1697) (in whose hand the drawing is inscribed according to R.E. Jeller and M. Plomp, 1992, infra).
Possibly Curt Otto (circa 1880-1929); C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 7 November 1929, part of lot 167 ('ca. 35 Bl. Handzeichnungen meist älterer Meister [...] Bisschop [...]'); where purchased by I.Q. van Regteren Altena for 40 guilders (Inventory book: '801. t. J de Bisschop copie J v Cleve').


Specialist note

Huygens' inscription indicates that he thought that de Bisschop made this drawing after a painting by Hans Holbein the Younger. However, this drawing probably copies a painting by Joos van Cleve (circa 1485-1540), formerly in the Watney Collection, Cornbury Park, Oxon., sold at Christie's, London, 23 June 1967, lot 41 (Fig. 1).
