Specialist note
The composition of the present group, along with the rhythmic folds of the Virgin's drapery are closely comparable to works emanating from the workshop of the sculptor known as the Master of Rimini, who is thought to have been located in the Upper Rhenish and Mosan border area. Prime examples from this group include pietas in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Walters Art Gallery, as well as an impressive alabaster Crucifixion from the church of Santa Maria della Grazie in Rimini, now in the Liebieghaus, Frankfurt.
