Specialist note

The depiction of the Virgo lactans seen here is closely linked to a larger ivory that was given by the Abbey of St Paul in Oosterhout to the Catharijneconvent, Utrecht (inv. no. StCC b30). Christ is seated in a long robe on the Virgin's knee, who herself is elegantly perched on her throne. She wears a crown, which is carved integrally with her veil.
