A REGENCY KINGWOOD-BANDED SATINWOOD LIBRARY BOOKCASE
ALMOST CERTAINLY BY GILLOWS, CIRCA 1815, THE BASE ALTERED
In Gothic style, with total of twenty-four adjustable shelves, the original upper shelves in mahogany with reeded satinwood facings, the later lower shelves in pine with conforming satinwood facings, the cluster columns with kingwood ring-mouldings, the base with vase-shaped back feet and solid satinwood front feet, the base originally with two extra bays and cupboard doors
101 in. (257 cm.) high; 100 ½ in. (255.5 cm.) wide; 22 in. (56 cm.) deep

Specialist note

Gillows made a mahogany version of this splendid Gothic bookcase (a one-off in their Estimate Sketch Books) for a Mrs Babington in 1814. In the drawing (ESB folio 1963) the base is eccentrically wide and must have been designed to fit under two windows either side of the upper section. The present lot originally had an extra wide base too and must have been made for a similar room.
