Of campana form, on spreading circular pedestal foot, the side applied with scrolling acanthus below a band of fruiting vines on a matted ground, with entwined serpent side handles, the domed cover with horse finial, the sides engraved with two inscriptions, one later, the cover with an additional inscription, marked on body, cover and finial

The inscriptions read, 'Won at Chelmsford / July 19th 1818 / by Rhoda, 5 Years Old / Beating / Glowworm, Philamonas / and / Several Others' and to the other side, 'The Queen Elizabeth II / Coronation Handicap Plate / Thirsk / June 13th 1953'.

The cover engraved, 'Won by / Schipio / Precipitation - Romulea / 1 Mile. 4 Fur'.

The underside further engraved, 'Chelmsford Races, 1818'

Specialist note

1818 was the most successful season of racing for Rhoda, a British thoroughbred racehorse, broodmare, and one of the most active of all British classic winners. The 1818 race at Chelmsford was one of ten wins during the horse's five-year-old season, and one of forty-five in the horse's career. The Racing calendar of 1818 notes that Rhoda ran twice at Chelmsford. The second time, winning the Chelmsford Gold Cup for 100 guineas (Edward and James Weatherby (1819). Racing calendar, 1818. C.H.
