MARK OF WILLIAM CRIPPS, LONDON, 1755
Shaped oval and with ribbon-tied reeded shell and foliate border, engraved with the Royal arms flanked by initials 'GR', later engraved with crest within the Garter motto beneath a marquesss' coronet, marked underneath, further engraved with a number and scratchweight 'No.9 44"7"0'
16.1/8 in. (41.2 cm.) wide
41 oz. 1 dwt. (1,277 gr.)
The Royal arms are those of King George II (r.1727-1760).
The crest is that of Stewart, probably for Charles, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry K.G. (1778-1854).

Probably either Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, Later 2nd Marquess of Londonderry (1769-1822), or Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) and by descent.

The present lot was one of a set of four meat-dishes of this size used as part of an extensive dinner service.
