Of slender ovoid form with fluted waisted neck and plain loop handle, the foot with gadrooned rim, the body engraved with two inscriptions within oval reserves, one flanked by an ensign and anchor surmounted by later initial M and baron's coronet, marked on foot and cover
13 in. (33.3 cm.) high
21 oz. 9 dwt. (667 gr.)
The inscriptions read 'Bequest of the Hon.ble John Forbes Admiral of the Fleet & Gen.l. of Marines' and 'Bequeathed to the Hon. Mrs. Wellesley Pole by Mrs. Caillaud, 1812'.

Purchased with a bequest from Admiral the Hon. John Forbes (1714-1796) to Mrs. Caillaud (d.1812), by whom bequeathed to the Hon. Mrs. Wellesley-Pole, later Lady Maryborough and Countess of Mornington (1760-1851), and by descent to her daughter Lady Raglan (d. 1881).

Specialist note

Mrs Caillaud was presumably a relation of the distinguished East India Company General John Caillaud (1726-1812), a key figure in the early battles with the French in the 1750s. His wife Mary Pechell died in 1808 so the original owner is unlikely to have been her.
