Specialist note
The chair pattern is based on Thomas Chippendale's designs for 'Ribband Back Chairs', published in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1762, No. XV, and a set of chairs at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, supplied around 1755 by Chippendale also correspond closely to the design. Another set, of identical pattern to the present lot, including the square panelled and foliate-embellished leg, are in a private Scottish collection. Given that the present chairs were acquired in Scotland, it may be that the ribbon back remained a fashionable pattern north of the border well into the 19th century.
