Specialist note

The sitter is Sarah Gale, daughter of Rev. Roger Baldwin, D.D., rector of the Aldingham, Lancs., and Prebendary of Carlisle. In 1785, she married Major (later Lieut.-General) Henry Richmond Gale. In Skipton's catalogue, this work is listed under 1786.
