General Henry Richmond Gale (great-grandson of sitter), Bardsea Hall, Kilverstone, Lancashire, until 1909.
Edward Drummond Libbey, from 1916, by whom gifted to the Toledo Museum of Art.

Specialist note

The sitter is Sarah Gale, daughter of Rev. Roger Baldwin, D.D., rector of the Aldingham, Lancs., and Prebendary of Carlisle. In 1785, she married Major (later Lieut.-General) Henry Richmond Gale. In Skipton's catalogue, this work is listed under 1786.
