Specialist note

The present miniature is an early work by William Grimaldi, painted when the artist was only 22 years old.
There is a reference to a 'Portrait of a Lady, Three quarters face looking to her right. Size 1.75 x 1.5 inches, oval', painted in 1773, in A. B. Grimaldi, A Catalogue of the Works of William Grimaldi, 1873, p. 13, no. 7, which may refer to the present lot.
