JAMES SCOULER (BRITISH, 1740-1812)

Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie grew up in County Down and joined the 3rd Irish Horse as a Cornet. He married Annabella Taylor in 1786. He stood trial for murder in 1788 after killing an opposing duellist, but was acquitted of 'justifiable homicide'. He was made Adjutant-General of San Domingo in 1796, and survived an attack by eight assassins, killing six of them. In 1801 he left Jamaica in command of his regiment; in 1809 he commanded the cavalry against Runjeet Singh. As Brigadier he headed advance of Auchmuty's Java expedition directing attack on Cornelis in 1811 and in 1812 he deposed the Sultan of Palembang, Sumatra. In the same year he defended Javanese confederacy at Yokhyakarta and was made Major-General of the 8th Royal Irish Hussars.He was killed in 1814 whilst leading the charge on a Nepalese hill fort at Kalunga, in the Battle of Nalapani. His last words were famously, 'One shot more for the honour of Down', which are inscribed in the monument to him in the town of Comber, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. He was named K.C.B., posthumously in 1815.
