CIRCLE OF ROSALBA CARRIERA (ITALIAN, 1675-1757)
A young gentleman previously called Prince Charles Edward Stuart, The Young Pretender, in red velvet coat over breastplate, long powdered wig
on ivory
oval, 3 in. (76 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame, engraved on the reverse 'Prince / Charles Edward / the young Pretender / B. 1720. D.1788. / By Rosalba'
inscribed in ink on the reverse 'Rosalba'

With D. S. Lavender (Antiques) Ltd., in 1998 (as Charles Edward Stuart by Rosalba Carriera, from the Walpole Family).

Specialist note

This sitter was previously thought to be Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), The Young Pretender, however the absence of the sash or breast-star of the Order of the Garter, and the different facial features of the sitter compared to accepted portraits of Charles Edward Stuart make this unlikely.
