Specialist note

The present watch is a superb example of the celebrated first series "Dato Compax" reference 4767 featuring a very unusual original luminous dial, matching perfectly with the hands. Signature and writings are in French, in accordance with the day and month discs.

Connoisseurs will notice that the present dial's layout was fitted in a gold version that passed through our saleroom in May 2009, lot 127, and fetched a record for this reference.

Rolex's celebrated Oyster triple calendar chronograph or "Dato Compax" wristwatch was available in four different series: The first, reference 4767 such as the present watch, was introduced into the market in 1947. Made in a small series only, the model was available in yellow and pink gold as well as in stainless steel and with various dial layouts.

Reference 4767 was replaced by reference 5036, followed by references 6036 and 6236.Different versions of reference 4767 in regard to case material and dial layout are illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 372 - 375.
