Each inscribed in blue, the first CONS.CICORE., the second .DIAPHINICON. on a scrolled banner, reserved on a ground of scrolling fruiting foliage, the lower parts with an ochre, yellow and blue coat-of-arms depicting a bull below flowers within an oval cartouche, one with minor flat chip to upper rim, minor flaking to glaze

Specialist note

The medicial mixture stored in the first jar would have been prepared using chicory; see Rudolf E.A. Drey, Apothecary Jars, London, 1978, p. 195, where he notes 'Cichorium...Chichory...Roots, leaves, flowers and seeds used'. Also see Drey, ibid., p. 199 in relation to the original contents of the second albarello: 'Diaphoenicum...an electuary having purgative action'.
