FIRST HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY, PROBABLY MONTELUPO, ONE INSCRIBED NT IN BLUE TO THE BASE
Each of slightly waisted cylindrical form, painted in blue, green, yellow and ochre with scrolling labels, one for VO·PETORALE, the other for HYSOPO·HVM, against a ground of blue flowerheads and scrolling foliage, the necks with foliage between bands, the lower parts with hatched ornament, the first with crack to lower body and footrim chip, the second with chip to upper rim and some glaze loss

Specialist note

HYSOPO·HVM probably refers to Hissopo humida or oesypus humida, the name for wool fat or lanolin. VO·PETORALE may refer to an ointment used for the treatment of disorders of the chest.
A very similar pair of albarelli were sold by Christie's Paris on 7 November 2007, lot 134.
