DATED 1856
Cylindrical with detachable covers, engraved with presentation inscription, 'Address From The Madras Native Association to The Right Honorable Lord Viscount Canning on His Lordship's First Visit to the Presidency/Presented on the 21 of February 1856', on wood stand
14½ in. (36.8 cm.) long

Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning (1812-1862) and by descent to
Hubert George de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832- 1916), by whom bequeathed to his great-nephew,
Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947), and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.

Specialist note

In July 1855, Lord Palmerston selected him to serve as Governor General of India. Canning left England for India in December 1855 and began his new post at the end of Feburary 1856. The present lot was given in honour of his first address.
