Tête de Femme: Madeleine, from: La Suite de Saltimbanques (Bloch 2; Baer 3a)
etching with drypoint, 1905, on laid paper without watermark, signed in pencil, a fine, rich impression printing with much tone, one of only a few impressions before steel-facing, printed by E. Delâtre, Paris, 1905, with margins, faint light-staining, generally in very good condition
P. 120 x 90 mm., S. 195 x 147 mm.

A gift from the artist; thence by descent to the present owner.

Specialist note

According to Brigitte Baer approximately twelve impressions were printed prior to steel-facing, of which she knew of three: in the Musée Picasso, Paris (unsigned); the National Gallery of Art, Washington (signed); and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (signed). We are aware of only one impression offered at auction in the last forty years (sold at Kornfeld, Berne, on 17 June 1987, lot 139, for CHF 50,000).
