A copy made by Fragonard in 1761 while he was in Rome after a painted version of Michelangelo's black chalk drawing, The Rape of Ganymede, which was formerly in the Giustiniani Collection. Jacques-Louis David copied the same picture about fifteen years later (P. Rosenberg and L.-A. Prat, Jacques-Louis David 1748-1825. Catalogue raisonné des dessins, Milan, 2002, vol. I, no. 1047).
