Specialist note

The composition is characteristic of Montfort, and the patterned blue-and-white dish, with subtly varying designs, appears in a number of his still lives (for example, P. Chiapatti and M. Rosci, Octavianus Montfort, Turin, 1985, pls. 26-28).
