Baluster form on spreading foot, the body with central reeded rib, the domed hinged cover with openwork shell thumbpiece, with scroll handle, engraved with an inscription and a cock-fighting scene, marked under foot, inside cover and on handle

Specialist note

The inscription reads Presented to Colonel Wm Fitzhugh CHATHAM

William Fitzhugh (1741-1809) was a prominent Virginian landowner and politician. In 1779 he served in the Continental Congress, and later in the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate. Fitzhugh was particularly close to George Washington, with whom he served on the vestry at Pohick Church in Lorton, Virginia. In 1804 Fitzhugh's daughter Mary Lee married George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of Martha Washington and adopted grandson of George Washington. Their daughter, Mary Anna Randolph, married Robert E. Lee in 1831.
