Specialist note

William Morris Davis (1850-1930) was an American geologist, founding member of the Association of American Geographers. He is best known for his theories on the cycle of erosion. 'Running water, in Davis's view, was generally the most important agent in moulding landscapes' (ANB online); his theory is clearly demonstrated by the river in these models.
