Anonymous (Cuzco School Early 18th century)

This painting is linked to others within the Circle of Diego Quispe Tito (School of Cuzco, Peru) circa 1690-1710 on the similar subject, The Heavenly and Earthly Trinities. According to scholar Barbara Von Barghahn the imagery was inspired by European engraving dated to around 1600 by Hieronymus Wierix (Jerome Wierix) whose numerous engravings provided useful information about religious compositions to artists in the New World. However, the origin of the two trinities dates back to the late medieval ages. During the early periods of evangelization in the Americas, this image was used extensively by the various orders but was particularly popular with the Jesuits.
