Anonymous (Cuzco School 18th century)
A painted wooden writing cabinet or escritorio with drop front, iron rattail hinges, lock and side pulls, and bun feet. The exterior is painted with stylized floral and leaf motifs and the drop front is detailed with hunting scene, the back is left unpainted. The interior reveals 11 drawers of various dimensions edged in goldleaf and painted with fern-like motifs; three have iron pulls the rest have leather; the drop front includes a different hunting scene.

Specialist note

Derived from the bargueño, escritorios such as this with its tiny bun legs, were most probably set on a table in the Spanish colonial homes. With its numerous drawers of varying dimensions, this rather utilitarian furnishing is nevertheless lavished with charming floral motifs and embellished in goldleaf throughout. Two idyllic hunting scenes set in lush landscapes with hunters dressed in eighteenth-century European fashion adorn the exterior and interior drop front panel.
