Specialist note
Nash comments on his red and black works on paper: 'In the work on paper, the red shapes are made on a flat surface using soft pastel. Most of the pastel adheres to the paper ... the paper is shaken to make the dust spread upwards and the images are sprayed with fixative. The black shapes are then drawn with charcoal, and the resulting dust is shaken downwards and fixed. The upward gesture is appropriate to the life force in red; the downward gesture is appropriate to the death force of black' (N. Lynton, David Nash, London, 2007, p. 149).
