A GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE
IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS SHEARER, CIRCA 1790
With an urn-topped pediment and corbelled cornice above four astragal-glazed doors, the lower section with a secretaire drawer and fitted interior above circular panelled doors on splayed bracket feet

Specialist note

This bookcase reflects the influence of Thomas Shearer's Book of Prices, 1788. Similar urn-capped Gothic arcaded cornices feature on his pattern for a wardrobe, whilst the Gothick glazing pattern and splayed bracket foot can be seen on designs for secretaires (illustrated in R. Fastnedge, Sheraton Furniture, London, 1962, figs. 66-67).
