pencil and watercolour with gum arabic and with scratching out
7¼ x 10¼ in. (18.4 x 26 cm.)

with Agnew's, London, where purchased by the present owner in 1982.

Specialist note

At an early age Copley Fielding became a pupil of John Varley (see lots 1214-1217) and took up painting watercolour landscape. In 1813 he was elected a full member of the Old Water-colour Society, and in 1831 became its President. He is celebrated for his grand British landscapes, and examples of his works can be found in major institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Louvre.
