A PORTUGUESE OR PORTUGUESE COLONIAL JACARANDA BUREAU
18TH CENTURY 19TH CENTURY
The slant front opening to a scrolling interior fitted with multiple drawers flanking a central door, above two short and three longer graduated drawers, flanked by pierced scrolling sides, with graphite inscription '5/7 1715' and 'Bernanfisao'
46½ in. (118 cm.) high, 50½ in. (128 cm.) wide, 26 in. (66 cm.) deep

Specialist note

The finely-figured hardwood, robust lines and carving, together with the blending of Anglo and Continental furniture design elements all combine to make this a classic example of Portuguese, or Portuguese Colonial, case furniture.

There are multiple close examples of these types of desks, but one particularly similar example, with the same pierced and scroll-carved angles, apron and feet is illustrated in F. Castro Freire, Mobiliário: Móveis de Conter, Pousar e de Aparato, vol. II, Lisbon, 2002, pp. 128-129.
