Lot 77 ROMANEE-CONTI GRAND CRU

The 1.8 hectares monopole vineyard of Romanée-Conti, often described as "the pearl of Burgundy" produces the world's most sought after and thrilling expression of Pinot Noir. The vineyard was originally called Le Cloux des Cincq Journaux and run by the monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy, and it became known as La Romanée-Conti after the French revolution. The vineyard has a sloping east-south-east exposure which offers the maximum potential exposure to sunlight whilst ensuring optimum water draining capability; the perfect combination for producing the finest Pinot Noir grapes. Production from this famous vineyard is tiny, with on average only 450 cases per year.

In original wooden case, original straws. Consecutive bottle numbers 000934 to 000945. Slightly corroded capsules, one damaged. Leroy strip labels, bin-soiled and stained labels. Levels: two 1cm, eight 1.5cms, one 2.5cms, one 3cms below base of corks
Tasting note: Most recently, a magnum: its initial depth of colour now softening, rim maturing; very meaty, fragrant nose which opened up gloriously, tangy, fragrant, blackberry; fairly sweet, rich, mouthfilling, very good flavour and texture, spicy, still tannic. Not an easy wine, needing far more bottle-ageing. Last tasted November 2003 **(***)2010-2030 M.B.
