Each with padded rectangular scrolled back and seat covered in fawn leather, with reed-moulded seat-rail, on reeded tapering legs with brass caps and castors

Sir John Gladstone, Bt. (d. 1851), Fasque, Kincardineshire.

Specialist note

John Gladstone purchased the estate and house at Fasque in 1829 and, although he brought a house-full of furnishings from Seaforth, his former house outside Liverpool, much was required to fill his new home. Robust 'Grecian' furnishings of the type displayed in this pair of armchairs were supplied by firms such as Gillows of Lancaster and London, and Morisons of Ayr.
