Specialist note

Lady Margaret (d. 1591), daughter of Thomas Duke of Norfolk, and the mother of Edward and Richard Sackville, was the first wife of Robert Sackville. As she died in 1591 before her husband received earldom, she never reached the dignity of Countess of Dorset.
The present miniature is based on a larger painting once at Knole, the current whereabouts of which are unknown.
