A GEORGE II SILVER SALVER
CIRCA 1730
Shaped circular and on four scroll and panel feet, the shaped rim applied with foliage panels at intervals, engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked underneath with cancelled marks for 1727
14¼ in. (36.5 cm.) diam.

The arms are those of Powell quartering others impaling Frederick, for Thomas Powell (c.1701-1752) of Nanteos, co. Cardigan and his wife Mary (b.1682), daughter of Thomas Frederick (1650-1720), an East India merchant, whom he married in 1728. The Powells were leading Welsh Jacobites. Thomas Powell was M.P. for the Cardigan Boroughs from 1725 until 1727 and later stood successfully for the county, which he represented from 1742-1747. Mary brought with her a large dowry, her grandfather Sir John Frederick (1601-1685) having been Lord Mayor of London. By tradition this arrived at Nanteos in an iron chest secured by seven locks (F. Jones, Historic Cardiganshire Homes and their Families, Newport, 2000, p. 201). In 1739 Powell set about rebuilding the family seat in the fashionable classical style with the works continuing after his death in 1752. The house survives to this day as a hotel.
