FIRST EDITION. Baronio's early skin grafts on sheep are among the first closely controlled medical experiments using animals, and constitute 'the first purely scientific research in the history of plastic surgery' (Garrison-Morton). Along with John Hunter's transplant investigations in the 1770s, Baronio's work formed the background for Dieffenbach's early investigations into transplantation and regeneration, and the first successful human skin graft in 1817.
