Specialist note
Louis Gallait, Belgian (1810-1887). The present subject is based on a painting located in The Hermitage, formerly in the collection of N. A. Kushelev-Bezborodko, St. Petersburg. The execution of the Dutch Noblemen Count d'Egmont and Count Hoorn on June 5th 1568 ignited an open rebellion that plunged the Low Countries into war against Spanish rule. At the end of the conflict the Netherlands had won their independence.
