AN ITALIAN GREEN SERPENTINE MARBLE PEN-TRAY
EARLY 19TH CENTURY
In the form of an antique bath on paw feet, with twin serpent handles, on plinth base, losses to one handle
11¾ in. (30 cm.) wide

Note du spécialiste

This 'Grand Tour' pen-tray is conceived in the French/antique manner - its serpent handles recalling Athena/Minerva as goddess of wisdom. Its form derives from the Aldobrandini 'Antique bathing Vase' illustrated in Charles Tatham's, Etchings ... of Ancient Ornamental Architecture, 1799.
