Specialist note
The pier-table frame, with architectural tablet corners conforming to the marble, is richly carved in the goût antique promoted by the architect Charles De La Fosse's, Receuil de Meuble, 1768. In celebration of lyric poetry's triumph, its frieze is wreathed by 'Apollo' sunflowered tablets in a pearled ribbon-guilloche; while its lambrequined tablet displays a laurel-garland medallion of the poetess Sapho. Its antique-fluted columnar legs are likewise wreathed by a pearled ribbon-guilloche beneath their altar-hollowed capitals.
